Preface
What is the purpose behind this little book? It makes no pretence at research or scholarship into the life of Angela Merici, such as are so evident in Querciolo Mazzoni's recent "magnum opus" (it appeared in 2007): "Spirituality, Gender and the Self in Renaissance Italy", with the subtitle: "Angela Merici and the Company of St Ursula (1474 -1540). It is already about twenty years since another "magnum opus" appeared, entitled: "Angela Merici", with the sub-title: "A Contribution towards a Biography", the combined effort of three authors: Luciana Mariani - Elisa Tarolli - Marie Seynaeve.
I am well aware, though, how seldom such tomes, usually the fruit of many years of assiduous and meticulous research, are read at depth outside the circle of scholarly or historical interest, mostly through lack of time or through a certain suspicion or fear of the material being too "high-brow". This little undemanding book, therefore, is aiming to encourage the reluctant reader to discover some of the hidden treasures in the books mentioned above, and so become more aware of how these treasures help to make Angela Merici more relevant and alive in our 21st century.
By highlighting some of the key-events in the life and work of Angela Merici - the people she met, the friends she made, the places she knew and visited, and by giving clear indications as to where this information can be found in recent books, it is hoped that Angela will indeed become more present and relevant in our own day. Hopefully, this little "alphabet" will become a kind of Ursuline "vade mecum", a truly informative and interesting treasure-trove.

Was ist die Absicht dieses kleinen Buches? Es erhebt keinen Anspruch auf Erforschung oder Wissenschaftlichkeit in Bezug auf Angela Mericis Leben, so wie es offenkundig ist in Querciolo Mazzonis neuestem „opus magnum“ (erschienen 2007): „Spirituality, Gender and the Self in Renaissance in Italy“, mit dem Untertitel: „Angela Merici and the Company of St. Ursula (1474.1540)“*. Es ist bereits rund zwanzig Jahre her, seit ein anderes „magnum opus“ erschien mit dem Titel: „Angela Merici“ und dem Untertitel: „Contributo per una Biografia“**, die gemeinsame Leistung dreier Autorinnen: Luciana Mariani – Elisa Tarolli – Marie Seynaeve.
Mir ist aber sehr wohl bewusst, dass solche Bände, die gewöhnlich die Frucht vieler Jahre fleißiger, akribischer Arbeit sind, außerhalb des Kreises wissenschaftlich und historisch Interessierter selten in der Tiefe gelesen werden, meist aus Zeitmangel oder wegen eines gewissen Verdachts oder einer Furcht, das Material könnte zu hochgestochen sein. Dieses kleine anspruchslose Buch hier zielt deshalb darauf, den zögernden Leser zu ermutigen, einige der in den oben genannten Büchern verborgenen Schätze zu entdecken und sich so bewusst zu werden, wie diese Schätze helfen, Angela Merici in unseren 21. Jahrhundert bekannter und lebendiger zu machen.
Durch das Hervorheben einiger Schlüsselereignisse im Leben und Werk Angela Mericis – die Menschen die sie traf, die Freunde, die sie gewann, die Orte, die sie kannte und aufsuchte – und durch klare Angaben, wo diese Informationen in neueren Büchern zu finden sind., ist zu hoffen, dass Angela in unseren Tagen wirklich gegenwärtig und wichtig wird. So besteht die Hoffnung, dass dieses kleine „Alphabet“ eine Art ursulinisches „Vademecum“ wird, eine wahrhaft informative und interessante Fundgrube.
